After the Storm: What to Check in Your Yard First

Storms Leave Hidden Hazards in Your Yard

Douglasville often experiences strong storms, especially between March and September. These storms bring high winds, heavy rain, and falling branches. The National Weather Service shows that Douglas County averaged more than 20 severe weather alerts per year over the past five years. After a storm, it is important to inspect your yard right away.

“Many hazards aren’t easy to see right after a storm,” says Luis Perez, owner ofVilchis Tree Services Pro of Douglasville. “We tell homeowners to do a careful walk-through before using their yard again.”

Step 1: Check for Downed Power Lines

Look for power lines on the ground or tangled in tree branches. Do not go near them. Call Georgia Power or 911. Power lines can be active even if they look broken.

Step 2: Look for Leaning or Cracked Trees

Check if any trees are leaning, split, or missing bark. A tree that looks stable could fall later. These are signs that the tree is weak or damaged.

“Even if a tree is still standing, it might be at risk,” Luis explains. “We’ve seen trees fall days after a storm. Always get dangerous ones checked.”

Step 3: Inspect Branches Over Your Roof or Driveway

Large limbs may hang over your home, car, or power lines. These limbs can fall later and cause major damage. Look for broken branches still attached to trees, especially on oak and pine trees, which are common in Douglasville.

Step 4: Watch for Uprooted Roots

Some trees may shift in the ground without falling. Check the base of your trees. If roots are exposed or the ground is lifted, the tree may be unstable.

Step 5: Examine Fences and Structures

Fallen limbs or wind-blown trees often damage fences, sheds, or decks. Check for cracked boards, bent panels, or holes in roofing. Take photos of all damage for insurance records.

Step 6: Stay Safe During Cleanup

Do not use a chainsaw if you are not trained. Do not climb trees or stand on ladders near damaged limbs. Call a professional to handle large or dangerous tree services.

“We’ve helped families avoid accidents just by removing one bad branch,” says Luis. “Call us before trying anything risky.”
